Cervical, Uterine, Ovarian and Breast Cancer Statistics

UTERINE CANCER

  • Nationally, an estimated 42,160 new cases were expected to be diagnosed.
  • In Wisconsin, 1,000 cases were estimated in 2009.
  • Incidence rates of endometrial cancer have been decreasing by about .5% since 1997 after increasing in the previous decade.
  • Death rates from endometrial cancer have been stable since 1991 after decreasing an average of 1.6% per year from 1975 -1995.

OVARIAN CANCER

  • An estimated 21,550 new cases of ovarian cancer were expected in 2009.
  • Ovarian cancer accounts for about 3% of all cancers among women and ranks second among gynecological cancers, second only to uterine cancer.
  • Ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.
  • The 10 year relative survival rate for all stages combined is 39%.

CERVICAL CANCER

  • Nationwide 11,270 new cases diagnosed in 2009.
  • In Wisconsin, 160 new cases diagnosed.
  • An estimated 4,070 deaths from cervical cancer were expected in 2009.
  • Mortality rates have declined due to prevention and early detection as a result of screening.

BREAST CANCER

  • Nationwide 192,370 new cases diagnosed in 2009.
  • In Wisconsin, 3,480 new cases diagnosed in 2009.
  • Statistically, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
  • Death rates are projected to be 24% for women.
